The Centre for Molecular and Structural Biomedicine (CBME) is based at University of Algarve and its mission is to carry out research and education in advanced biomedical sciences and the re-enforcement of the University-Hospital interactions.

The cross-disciplinary expertise gathered by CBME enables the integration of knowledge from molecular, structural and cell biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, genomics, gene targeting and bioinformatics to study both normal and pathological processes. The integration of medical teams working in hospital environments provides the Centre with the necessary clinical research expertise as well as the required biological materials.

CBME is a part of the Associated Laboratory Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengineering, a research and development (R&D) unit, founded in October 2006, aiming to be a strategic infrastructure for the development of the Portuguese R&D and innovation policies in the areas of Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Life, Biomedical and Agricultural Sciences.

CBME integrates program MIT-Portugal in Bio-Engineering Systems.
